Seaver becomes Mets first 20 game winner
New York split a pair with the Phillies. They lost the first game 4-2, when Philadelphia broke a 2-2 tie in the 7th on cather Dave Watkins RBI single. The Phillies added an insurance run an inning later when CF John Briggs drove home Don Money.

The Mets, behind Tom Seaver, rebounded in the nightcap, scoring 3 runs in the 2nd. 2B Al Weis hit a single to CF, bringing in Ron Swoboda and then Seaver’s forceout at 2B scored Jerry Grote and Rod Gaspar on Phillie catcher Mike Ryan’s error.

Seaver (20-7) went all the way en route to becoming the Mets first 20 game winner in franchise history.

Chicago lost to the Pirates so with the DH split the Mets were 4.5 back in the NL East behind the Cubs.
