New Hampshire 5 - Binghamton 4

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats scored two runs with two outs and stunned the Binghamton Mets, 5-4, in ten innings on Thursday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Shane Opitz’s bloop single against Jon Velasquez capped New Hampshire’s furious rally and handed the B-Mets their second walk-off loss of the season.

With the Fisher Cats down to their final out, Dwight Smith Jr. extended his personal hitting streak to eleven games and kept the home team’s hopes alive with a double into the right-field alley. Melky Mesa tied the game by pulling a single into left and advanced when Jared King’s throw home was off target. Two batters later, Opitz ended the game by dunking a pinch-hit in front of King in left.

Binghamton had scored the go-ahead run in the top of the tenth when Blake McFarland balked in Jairo Perez from third base. Binghamton had runners at the corners with two outs when McFarland failed to come to the set position on his first pitch to Brandon Nimmo.

The rollercoaster ending was a far cry from the game’s first half that saw the teams combine for no hits nor runs through the first four innings.

The Fisher Cats cracked the scoreboard with a quick attack to open the fifth. With two aboard, Matt Newman pulled an RBI double into right. Two batters later, Murphy scored New Hampshire’s second run when Perez fired erratically to first on a potential inning-ending double play.

Perez got retribution in the sixth by starting Binghamton’s rally with a poked single to right field. Eudy Pina followed by shooting a ground ball to second. Jon Berti ranged to his left to snag the hard-hit grounder, but threw wide to second. Perez scampered home with Binghamton’s first run as the ball bounced down the left-field line. Three batters later, Jayce Boyd ripped a two-run double down the left-field line giving the B-Mets their first lead.

The Fisher Cats erased the advantage against the bullpen in the seventh. Schimpf opened the frame by walking against Chase Huchingson and advanced to third on a single and sacrifice bunt. With two aboard, Kevin Nolan greeted reliever Paul Sewald with a sacrifice fly to right-center, tying the game at three.

McFarland (1-0) earned his first win despite allowing a run in 1-1/3 innings of relief. Velasquez (0-1) took the defeat while suffering his first blown save of the season.

B-Met starter Rainy Lara allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over six innings in the no-decision. Mike Lee carried a no-hitter into the sixth, but settled for the no-decision after six innings of work.

The B-Mets (8-6) continue their four-game series against the Fisher Cats on Friday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Gabriel Ynoa takes the mound versus LHP John Anderson. RHP Rainy Lara takes the mound against RHP Mike Lee.

POSTGAME NOTES: The B-Mets have lost three straight road games…it was the second time in three road games the B-Mets have blown a lead with two outs and lost in walk-off fashion (4/14 @ Erie, G2)…it was the first extra-inning game of the season for Binghamton…Dario Alvarez stranded an inherited runner in the ninth by retiring all three batters he faced
