Charlotte 3 - St. Lucie 2

It was a game of missed opportunities on offense for the St. Lucie Mets as they lost to the Charlotte Stone Crabs 3-2 on Thursday at Charlotte Sports Park.

The Mets grounded into three double plays, had an inning end when a base runner was hit by an infield single and struck out at inopportune times in the last two innings.

The Stone Crabs trailed 2-1 with two outs in the third when Jake Bauers hit a two-run double off of Logan Taylor to put the Crabs up by the final margin, 3-2. Bauers’ double came after Taylor walked Willy Adames.

The Mets took a 2-0 lead in the second when Amed Rosario tripled with two outs, driving in Matt Oberste. Rosario scored on the play when Juniel Querecuto’s relay throw skipped away from third.

But the Mets offense couldn’t produce any more runs. The Mets grounded into double plays in the first, fifth and sixth innings.

In the seventh, Rosario looked like he singled to right field, but the ball hit Victor Cruzado on the back of his foot as he was running to second base. Cruzado was ruled out and the inning was over.

In the eighth, the Mets put the tying run on third with one out when Champ Stuart singled and moved Jhoan Urena to third. Stuart then stole second base. However, Jeff Ames struck out Jeff McNeil and got Michael Conforto to ground out harmlessly to first to end the threat.

In the ninth, Cruzado doubled with one out against Brad Schreiber. Schreiber recovered by striking out Dominic Smith and Rosario to end the game. He registered his eighth save.

The Mets out-hit the Stone Crabs 8-4. Rosario had two hits. Conforto and Smith were the only Mets not to collect a hit. Colton Plaia extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Taylor took the tough loss. He pitched six innings and allowed three runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out five.

Mike Hepple worked two perfect innings of relief.

Stone Crabs starter Ryne Stanek earned the win. He held the Mets to two runs, one earned, on four hits. Team press release
