Charlotte 4 - St. Lucie 1

The St. Lucie Mets offense continued to struggle on Friday as the Charlotte Stone Crabs pulled away for a 4-1 win at Charlotte Sports Park.

The Mets managed just six hits and one unearned run that wasn’t scored until the eighth inning.

Rob Whalen gave the Mets seven strong innings and allowed just two earned runs while giving up seven hits and getting three double play balls. But it wasn’t enough, as he departed after the seventh trailing 3-0.

The Mets have now scored 10 runs in Whalen’s five starts. He is 0-2 but sporting a 2.10 ERA.

The Stone Crabs scored half of their runs in the second on a two-run single by Granden Goetzman after a passed ball moved runners to second and third.

In the sixth, Keon Wong led off with an infield single. He stole second base and advanced to third on a single by Willy Adames. Whalen then got Jake Bauers to ground into a 4-6-3 double play, but Wong scored from third to make it 3-0.

The Mets scored their first run in 14 innings in the eighth. Jeff McNeil lifted a fly ball into left field that was dropped by Goetzman, allowing McNeil to get to second base. A single by Michael Conforto moved McNeil to third and he scored on Matt Oberste’s sac fly to make it 3-1.

The Crabs got the run right back in the bottom of the eighth. Pat Blair grounded a ball to second that was booted by McNeil. Blair moved to second on another passed ball and scored on a two-out hit by Adames.

Offensively, the Mets have scored runs in just three of their last 36 innings during their current four-game losing streak.

Jhoan Urena extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single. McNeil had two bunt singles. Team press release
