5/9/15

Minor League Recap - 5-8-15

Vegas can't win 'em all.  Binghamton and Savannah are recently trying to.

Minor League Player of The Night - Casey Meisner with a stellar, dominant start for the Sand Gnats.

Honorable Mention - Alex Castellanos in his first AB after missing several games? A Grand Slam, naturally.

And Wuilmer Becerra, with a homer, triple, and single for the suddenly hot Gnats. He seems to be heating up.

AAA - Las Vegas - (20-9) 6 - El Paso (18 -11) 10

    RHSP Darin Gorski -   1.1-IP, 5-H, 7-R, 1-K, 5-BB, 6.58

    1B Alex Castellanos -   1-HR (8), .355, 4 RBIs.

Vegas looked like it was on its way to a 15th straight win with 5 in the first. But the 51s were outscored 10-1 the rest of the game and the streak went by the boards. Gorski got hammered.

AA - Binghamton (17-11) 4 -  Akron (12-16) 3

    RHSP Luis Cessa -  6.0-IP, 8-H, 3-R, 3-K, 1-BB, 2.67

    RF Jared King - 3-5, 1-R, 1-RBI, .252

    SS Gavin Cecchini -  2-3, 1-R, double, BB, .329

All the scoring in the first 3 innings.  Cecchini is having a fine season and dispelling doubts.

A+ - Charlotte (19-10) 4  -  St. Lucie (13-16) 1

    RHSP Rob Whalen -  7.0-IP, 7-H, 3-R, 6-K, 1-BB, 2.10

Mack - Whalen is one of those famous mid-round (2012-12th) picks that Sandy & Company are getting famous for... high ceiling high school pitchers that can be signed on the cheap. Whalens fastball hits 94 and he has a ++ curve and killer two-seamer. Right now, he projects out in the SP4-5 range, which could get even better as the 21-year old gets more outings. So far, only 31 (28-starts) in parts of four seasons and going into this game: 12-5, 1.90, 0.98. ETA: Opening day 2018

    2B Jeff McNeil -  2-4, 1-R, .317

A - Savannah (11-16) 5  -  Greenville (15-13) 1

    RHSP Casey Meisner -  7.0-IP, 2-H, 1-R, 9-K, 0-BB, 1.78

Mack - Meisner came into this game with four starts and a 1.93 ERA. He's starting to establish himself with the Sally League scouts as the pitching ace of this team and a possible true prospect of the game. And remember... he's only 19 years old!

    RF Wuilmer Beccera -   3-4, 1-R, 1-HR (4), 2-RBI, .275

    C Tomas Nido - 2-4, 1-R, .243

3B Eudor Garcia has been a timely and explosive shot in the arm for this team, going 8 for 13 and a walk in his first 3 Sand Gnat games.

Whelan and Meisner - 2 more quality draft picks. Pleas DFA Kirk and recall Castellanos today. Don't care about lefty/righty. It is more sucky/ not sucky.
