The Binghamton Mets stranded a season-high 15 runners, including three in the tenth, in a 2-1 walk-off loss to the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Wednesday afternoon at The Diamond. Mitch Delfino stroked an RBI single into right, the only hit by either team with a runner in scoring position, to send Richmond to the rubber match win. The B-Mets went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left multiple runners on in five separate innings.
After Binghamton failed to cash in on two singles and an intentional walk in the top of the tenth, the Squirrels jumped on Matt Koch in the bottom of the frame. Rando Moreno led off with a single and moved to third on a single by Mac Williamson. Delfino brought him home by lining Koch’s 1-1 offering into right, ending Binghamton’s four-series unbeaten streak.
The B-Mets’ woes with men on base started early as they let Kyle Crick off the hook by stranding two in the first inning. Jayce Boyd bounced into two double plays, killing a bases-loaded threat in the third and nullifying a rally in the fifth. The left-fielder left two more on base by grounding out to end the ninth.
The tail end of the batting order produced Binghamton’s only run in the fourth. With Aderlin Rodriguez on first, Albert Cordero executed a perfect hit-and-run, pulling a single into right and pushing Rodriguez to third. Gilbert Gomez broke the scoreless game by lifting a sac fly to center field.
Gabriel Ynoa cruised through his first five innings, needing just 57 pitches to keep the Squirrels off the board. The righty surrendered one hit and stranded five runners to preserve Binghamton’s one-run lead.
Ynoa’s smooth start hit the rumble strips in the sixth. Delfino poked a one-out single into right and Devin Harris dumped a bloop single into right before Angel Villalona legged out a fielder’s choice. With runners at the corners, Ynoa bounced a wild pitch past Cordero, prompting Delfino to race home with the tying run.
Jose Casilla (1-1) allowed four hits, but kept the B-Mets off the board in the ninth and tenth to earn the win. Koch (1-2) took his first loss in relief.
The B-Mets (19-14) return to the Southern Tier and open a four-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Thursday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Luis Cessa takes the mound against RHP Taylor Cole.
